Given the civil war in Iraq, is the Muslim world ready for democracy? Do they want it, or is democracy just a Western idea that doesn’t suit Muslim countries?
If they were ready for democracy they would have developed it on their own. Seems pretty obvious, really.
Edit: Maggiecat, if we were to use the definition of democracy you are applying to Egypt and Pakistan, Nazi Germany would have to be considered a democracy, as well. Strictly speaking, there is no democracy anywhere in the world, nor has there been for thousands of years. I think it’s obvious, however, that neither of these standards is consistent with the tenor of the original question.
What kind of democracy? The kind of democracy that brought someone with the mental abilities of Bush to power?. The kind of democracy that allows him to spy on his people , twist the law to get to his own ends “Gitmo bay anyone”. The kind of democracy that makes the rich richer & the poor poorer?.No , thank you sir.
I was a firm believer in democracy one day , now I am not sure.
Democracy is truly a western idea that the arab and muslim countries will not ever realize. The arab pennisula from the beginning of time has progressed through a culture of tribalism. May the strong lead. If there is not a dictatorship style of government then all they care about is who’s tribe or sect has the most amount of power. They have very little national pride. Its all about their tribe.
What? You mean the possibility of letting women and maybe even Jews vote? Not bloody likely.
Feminists/demoncrat women who hate the USA and Bush actually favor the treatment muslim women get from their men, not unlike favoring the treatment other demoncrat women got from Bill Clinton.
Hollyweird and the mainstream media don’t believe democracy works..except if they control it.
If a muslim country ever did embrace democracy I hope we can export our liberals so they too can experience political correctness as opposed to common sense
I don’t know if any of you are aware of this, but there are already several predominately Muslim nations that are constitutional democracies, including Egypt, Pakistan, Indonesia, and of course Turkey. How ‘free’ they are as compared to Western countries could be debated, but I would point out that the Western democracies have a longer history so far, and, some might question if even countries like England (which has no written constition or guarantees of a free press) and the United States (with our history of civil rights struggles, McCarthyism, and some provisions of the current Patriot Act, to name a few) are truly living up to the democratic ideal. My feeling is that certainly Turkey and Egypt are as ‘ready’ for democracy are we ever were. In the example of Turkey, I would even point that they, unlike the USA, have had a democratically elected female chief executive. (Her name was Tanzu Ciller). So, in short, I’d say the answer to your question is a resounding ‘yes”, the Muslim world is certainly ready for democracy: they’ve even already achieved what some here may claim is the impossible!
It does not agree with wisdom for every single person to have a say in who is in charge. Because there are good and bad people. Smart and ignorant. Why would you mess up the results for the ignorant?

Bush/Blair supported the destruction of the most pro-Western Muslim democracy in the Middle East (Lebanon).
When the Palestinians DEMOCRATICALLY voted for Hamas the US refused to acknowledge them and supported a boycott/sanctions.
The Americans are too motivated by selfish self-interest to allow true democracy in the Middle East.

Sure.. maybe in about 6 millon years
They never have been, they never will be.The Iraq war has nothing to do with muslim behavior..
One World Government
I think any form of Democracy for the Muslim world would have to encompass religion in a far bigger way that any, western style democracy.
You only need one thing to create a democracy, a democratic election, the rest would just naturally follow.
Am I being very optimistic here ?

Rob and Maggiecat have both answered the question perfectly.
