Speech By SN Goenka in UN Peace Summit ( Part 1 )
Video of Universal Spirituality for Peace By SN Goenka Date: August 29, 2000 When there is darkness, light is needed. Today, with so much agony caused by violent conflict, war and bloodshed, the world badly needs peace and harmony. This is a great challenge for religious and spiritual leaders. Let us accept this challenge. Every religion has an outer form or shell, and an inner essence or core. The outer shell consists of rites, rituals, ceremonies, beliefs, myths and doctrines. These vary from one religion to another. But there is an inner core common to all religions: the universal teachings of morality and charity, of a disciplined and pure mind full of love, compassion, goodwill and tolerance. It is this common denominator that religious leaders ought to emphasize, and that religious adherents ought to practice. If proper importance is given to the essence of all religions and greater tolerance is shown for their superficial aspects, conflict can be minimized. All persons must be free to profess and follow their faith. In doing so, however, they must be careful not to neglect the practice of the essence of their religion, not to disturb others by their own religious practices, and not to condemn or belittle other faiths. Given the diversity of faiths, how do we surmount the differences and achieve a concrete plan for peace? The Buddha, the Enlightened One, was often approached by people of different views. To them he would say, “Let us set aside our differences. Let …

there’s no such thing as world peace, only international peace and cooperation
Check out “Yoga Nine Vipassana” on Facebook for articles, research, video clips, and teachings on vipassana, compassion, and other related topics.
@shivakrishnarama
I hope he’s on the level; what book did you use?
Why is he walking out with a cane? To promote an image of being a wise, suffering yet compassionate man? “Oh dear, I’m not totally fit but making this trip to the U.N. for my love of the people is so important, blah ,blah, blah.”
Great and Enlightened talk! I learned a lot!
great speech

It is too late now to try to change this world through beautifull words of truth and wisdom. The only thing those words will achieve are aplauses for the two face politics in the crowd. But there is always time for me and for each individuals change and trascendence through awareness for high consciousness.
It’s funny how they want to cheer every 3 words, lol. That shows their mind is getting it but not their hearts. The people with power wont do anything after these words…
He didn’t mean Buddhism is not religion. His duty is sharing what he found peace in Vipassana Meditation. Any religion believers can practice Vipassana Meditation and you do not need to convert to Buddhism. Buddha Dharma is for all and relating to every one daily life. Any way, Sayagyi Goenka family does not need money and he found peace in his heart after meditation it better than money. If you want peace in your heart and then you need find it in your mind.
I have read or heard some peoples said Goenka is fraud or liar. As much as I know Sayagyi Goenka family is successful and rich industrialize family in Burma. I believe they are Hindu rather than Budhist (may be I was wrong). He met Sayagyi U Ba Khin and his illness was cured by Meditation under guidance of Sayagyi U Ba Khin. Sayagyi U Ba khin practice meditation method of Mahasi Sayadaw’s Vipassana Meditation. I think later he and his family became Buddhist after he met with U Ba Khin.
Brother of Dhamma, are you know more than this video or others but with subtitles in spanish??? Thanks for share it.
Be happy!
@peaceiloveyou2 brother u need zen first then vipassana. buddha practiced vipassna as last meditation
goenka will be biggest lie if he says buddhism is not a religion——–he should be punished for the same statement——he has gained popularity by buddhism not by hinduism—-vipassana is buddhism
@Magarmach09 : its good that you like this but dont use the words of hatred against others , as this is against the very teachings of Vipassana !

if only people listen to this man’s heart~it is not about meditation but what we meditate upon~it is not about “religion” but about the freedom to meet God without religious constraint~it is not about this teaching is better than any other~but that we are all equal in wisdom when we love one another whether we be Hindu, Muslim, Christian, Athiest or Jew~when people see the purity of selfless love, the world will turn in peace~and we will see the best in all beings~and then we can see God.
Great,great,great…………great. Absolutely fantastic.Mind blowing.
Thank you so much.
if only the world were actually concerned with peace. humanity is only interested in ego gratification. just look at family, friends, neighbors…. anyone really. what a depressing state.
